Extremal Quantile Treatment Effects ∗ Job Market Paper
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper establishes asymptotic theory and inference method for quantile treatment effect estimators when the quantile index is close or equal to zero. Such quantile treatment effects are of interest in many economic applications, such as the effect of maternal smoking on an infant’s adverse birth outcomes. When the quantile index is close to zero, the sparsity of data jeopardizes conventional asymptotic theory and bootstrap inference. When the quantile index is zero, there are no existing inference methods directly applicable in the treatment effect context. This paper establishes new estimation and inference theory for cases close or equal to zero. I illustrate the inference method with an application to estimate and test the effect of maternal smoking on the lower quantiles of infants’ birth weights.

Inference for Extremal Conditional Quantile Models, with an Application to Market and Birthweight Risks
Quantile regression is an increasingly important empirical tool in economics and other sciences for analyzing the impact of a set of regressors on the conditional distribution of an outcome. Extremal quantile regression, or quantile regression applied to the tails, is of interest in many economic and financial applications, such as conditional value-at-risk, production efficiency, and adjustmen...
متن کاملSeniority and Job Stability: A Quantile Regression Approach Using Matched Employer-Employee Data
Job mobility and employment durations can be explained by different theoretical approaches, such as job matching or human capital theory or dual labor market approaches. These models may, however, apply to different degrees at different durations in the employment spell. Standard empirical techniques, such as hazard rate analysis, cannot deal with this problem. In this paper, we apply censored ...
متن کاملTreatment Effects With Censoring and Endogeneity
This paper develops a nonparametric approach to identification and estimation of treatment effects on censored outcomes when treatment may be endogenous and have arbitrarily heterogeneous effects. Identification is based on an instrumental variable that satisfies the exclusion and monotonicity conditions standard in the local average treatment effects framework. The paper proposes a censored qu...
متن کاملInference for Extremal Conditional Quantile Models (extreme Value Inference for Quantile Regression)
Quantile regression is a basic tool for estimation of conditional quantiles of a response variable given a vector of regressors. It can be used to measure the effect of covariates not only in the center of a distribution, but also in the upper and lower tails. Quantile regression applied to the tails, or simply extremal quantile regression is of interest in numerous economic and financial appli...
متن کاملThe effects of English training abroad on labor market outcomes in Korea
This study examines the effects of English training abroad (hereafter ETA) on labor market outcomes in South Korea. ETA has become increasingly popular in many non-English speaking countries and refers to short-term language study training abroad where students spend anywhere from 6 months to 2 years taking language courses at an educational institutions. In this article, I conduct survival ana...
